It's crucial to have the right treatments done during the appropriate season, both to stop the current issue and prevent others from happening. Nobody better understands our environment better than Lynx Pest Control, and we customize our services depending on the season. For example, pests become more active in the spring, and they worsen when rainy weather arrives. This can drive the pests into your home, which can further complicate the issue. The winter can also drive the pests into your home since they’re working to escape the colder temperatures. Whether you’re having a pest issue at home or on a commercial property, we can help. Our team at Lynx Pest Control knows what methods need to be enacted to effectively rid your property of pests. Our local team at Lynx Pest Control has the knowledge and experience necessary to tackle any pest issue you may find yourself having in Leander and beyond. Year Round Protection from Pests While we are fortunate in Leander to have the sort of mild climate that means we can enjoy the outdoors almost year round, it also has its drawbacks. One of those is that pests are also active year round. Our services typically vary by season, because the needs of our clients do. Summer, for example, might be characterized by infestations on the exterior of your home or commercial property. Some of these infestations are entirely preventable if treated early enough in the spring. Winter months, on the other hand, when the temperatures drop, people in the region tend to have more pest issues on the interior of their homes, as pests try to get out of the cold. Fall maintenance can help stave off these sorts of issues. An ounce of prevention can go a long way in pest control. Treating your home or commercial property seasonally means being able to get ahead of many of the common pest issues we encounter in this region. This also means never having to deal with a fully-fledged infestation. Let Lynx Pest Control help you stay pest-free, year round. --- ### Cedar Park Pest Control > Residential and Commercial pest control services in Cedar Park, TX and surrounding areas. Seasonal Treatments: Summer, Spring, Winter, or Fall Our temperate climate in Cedar Park means that we are able to enjoy our outdoor spaces virtually year round. However, nest removal and treatment in the spring might mean you can avoid a summer infestation. Winter months can also present different pest problems, such as pests actively trying to enter the indoors to escape the colder temperatures. Our team of local experts know the right way to effectively rid your property of pests in addition to knowing when to have those treatments done so they are most effective. Year-Round Pest Protection While we are lucky enough in this region to be able to enjoy the outdoors in the summer, fall, winter, and spring. Unfortunately, this means that the pesky pests are year-round, as well. At Lynx Pest Control, our services vary by season, as the habits of pests do, too. The springtime is when most pests come out of hibernation and become more active, for example. This only gets worse with increased rainfall and rising temperatures. If the rains become heavy enough, it can drive the pests into your home or commercial property, creating a real problem. As we all know, the summers bring about the fire ant parades, which can easily crash any garden party or BBQ. From years of operating in the region, we at Lynx Pest Control know that the cooler months of fall and winter are the times to take preventative measures so that you can truly enjoy the outdoors during the warmer months. It is also important to keep the pests from setting up shop inside once the temperatures begin to drop. By treating your property at just the right time, we can keep the pest invasions at bay, year-round, indoor and out. --- ### Fleas & Ticks > Fleas & Ticks are some of many common pest control problems we handle expertly at LYNX Pest Control. Characteristics: Fleas and ticks typically prefer high humidity and warm temperatures. They are known as parasites that infest the fur and feathers of pets and wild animals and make them miserable by consuming their blood. They can carry a variety of diseases, including Lyme disease, which can cause an array of physical ailments and nervous system disorders. Ticks are most commonly known to transmit this disease, while fleas are often associated with the black plague. Although they are more widely seen on pets, they also pose a risk to humans. Size: 3 to 5 millimeters Potentially Dangerous: Yes Description: Fleas are flightless insects, and ticks are arachnids, meaning that, among other differences, fleas have six legs, and ticks have eight. Each of these parasites feeds on the blood of mammals and birds, and ticks sometimes feed on amphibians and reptiles. Both are found around the world and can live indoors or outdoors. Ticks require a certain level of moisture in the air around them, as they need it to undergo metamorphosis. Flea bites are similar to mosquito bites, and they often cause their host to scratch, pick, or bite at themselves to try to get rid of the pests. Fleas There are 2,500 species of fleas around the world that live by consuming blood from their hosts. They have narrow bodies, which allow them to move easily through the fur or feathers on their host’s body. Another feature they have adapted for this purpose is the hard plates on their bodies, covered with hairs and short spines. They don’t have wings, but some can leap distances as great as 50 times the length of their bodies. Their strong claws allow them to attach to their host, while their mouths are equipped to pierce the skin and draw blood. While some species don’t have eyes, most have simple eye spots with a biconvex lens, unlike the compound eyes that many other insects have. Their bodies have also adapted to be tough and pressure-resistant to survive scratching. In addition to carrying disease, fleas often cause severe skin irritation and infection in pets due to the itching and scratching they cause. Ticks Ticks live in warm and humid areas all around the world. There are two primary types of ticks, which are commonly known as “hard ticks” and “soft ticks. ” Being arachnids, ticks have eight legs, and typically have pear-shaped, or ovoid, bodies. When they feed on their host, their bodies become engorged with blood. Hard ticks have a shield on their dorsal surface and a structure similar to a beak, which shields their mouthparts. Soft ticks are different in that they have their mouthparts on the underside of their bodies. Ticks have an impressive ability to locate their host by odors that occur due to changes in the environment. Ticks are known to carry and transmit diseases through the blood that they ingest. --- ### Scorpions > Scorpions are one of many common pest control problems we handle expertly at LYNX Pest Control. Texas has 18 species of scorpions, but the most common scorpion found in Texas is the striped bark scorpion. Characteristics: Scorpions are typically found under landscaping materials such as paving stones, as well as logs and rocks. They usually don’t like extreme cold or hot temperatures and tend to look for water and a more comfortable environment when it is hot and dry. As nocturnal creatures, they often hide during the day and become active at night. Since they have flat bodies, it is easy for them to hide in small cracks and await their prey. Scorpions have a highly developed sense of hearing but usually rely on their sense of touch, because they don’t have the best eyesight, which is surprising. They have two to five pairs of eyes around their head in addition to two eyes on top of their head. Their most recognizable features include two claws, or pincers, to hold their prey, as well as a long tail with a stinger on the end. They use their stinger to paralyze prey and to defend themselves when threatened. Size: Up to 8½ inches long, although most Texas scorpions are around 2-3 inches Potentially Dangerous: Yes Description: Scorpions will sometimes enter homes to find a more hospitable environment during periods of extreme temperatures, especially in hot and dry weather. Striped Bark Scorpion The striped bark scorpion is considered to be a medium-sized scorpion. It is usually no more than 2¾ inches long. Its body is pale yellow, with two dark stripes that run down the length of its back. They are easily camouflaged, as their coloring often blends in seamlessly with their environment, which helps them hide from predators and gives them an advantage in surprising their prey. These scorpions usually live in southern-central states of the US, but can be found as far northwest as Colorado and as far east as Georgia and Florida. They are also common in northern Mexico. Arizona Bark Scorpion This variety is a bit larger than the striped bark scorpion, typically reaching a little over 3 inches. They are light brown and can cause fatalities in animals and children. It would be best if you always avoided these scorpions, as their sting can cause temporary dysfunction and extreme pain. Texas Cave Scorpion These scorpions are also common in Texas, but they typically live in a different environment than the striped bark scorpion. As their name implies, they usually live in caves. As they are most often found in rocky areas, you may also see them in limestone features and grottos. Giant Hairy Scorpion Although the giant hairy scorpion is one of the largest found in the United States at about 5½ inches, it is rarely dangerous to humans, as its venom is not very potent. It often feeds on other scorpions, as well as snakes and lizards. It is a yellow scorpion with a dark top and brown hairs all over its body. These hairs detect vibrations in the soil. --- ### Spiders > Spiders are one of many pest control problems we solve regularly. Wolf Spiders Wolf spiders are a hairy spider that range in size from . 04-1. 38 inches in length. They are a solitary species that have excellent eyesight. Most wolf spiders create burrows that they hide in to wait for their prey that they will then pounce on and even chase for short distances. A wolf spider bite, while painful, does not pose a serious risk to humans. House Spiders As their name suggests, house spiders are the most common species of spider to be found in homes. House spiders are generally a yellow or tan color with dark spots on its body; they have long slender legs. House spiders pose no significant health risk to humans and are considered to be nuisance pests. If you have noticed a fluctuation of ticks on your property it may be that wildlife introduced them to that area. The most common ticks found in Texas include: the Lone Star Tick, the Black Legged Deer Tick, the American Dog Tick, and the Brown Dog Tick. Dangers Ticks are a parasitic pest that feed on the blood of other animals as well as humans. Ticks can pose serious risks to our health as they are known transmitters of Lyme disease and the Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Indian meal moths are also known for their ability to be found in even the tightest of sealed containers. While the adult Indian meal moths flying around your kitchen may be what first alert you to an infestation, it is actually the larvae that do most of the damage to stored food sources. An adult female will lay her eggs on a food source like pasta, flour or rice the larva will then emerge from the egg and cover the surface of the food in a silken web and begin feeding. Once they are ready to pupate they will leave the contaminated food source and find a suitable place to do so in. Dangers Indian meal moths do not bite or sting and aren’t known to transmit any dangerous diseases to people. However, they will breed in and contaminate your stored food products with their silken webs, feces, and shed skins requiring them to be thrown out. In fact, large populations of Indian meal moths can become quite damaging to food sources. Sawtoothed Grain Beetle Color: Brown Characteristics: Flattened body and 6 saw-like teeth on each side of prothorax. Wings are present and developed, but this insect is not observed flying. Mature larva is long and fairly smooth, and the antennae have 3 segments (2nd segment the longest, 3rd segment very small). Size: Approximately 1/8 of an inch long. Other signs may include finding them inside of dry goods or by finding holes in food packaging. Dangers They pose no real health risks and are not known to transmit any diseases to humans. However, if sawtoothed grain beetles gain access to kitchens they may contaminate your food sources which you will then have to discard- costing you both time and money. Also, sawtoothed grain beetles can create the proper conditions for mold growth in the areas that they are found infesting. Millipedes Color: Brown or black Characteristics: Many legs Size: 1 1/16 to 4 1/2 inches. Potentially Dangerous: No Description: Millipedes have a long worm-like segmented body with many pairs of legs. Their name means “thousand leggers”, but in reality they only have about 30-333 pairs of legs depending on the species. In general adult millipedes are 1/16th to 4 ½ inches in length although some species can be much longer; millipedes are black or brown in color and they may have orange or red markings on their body. Nesting Sites: Millipedes are nocturnal and can usually be found hiding under rocks, piles of leaves, piles of garbage, and mulch during the day, during the evening hours they will scavenge for food- decaying plants and other dead insects. Millipedes will enter into homes after periods of heavy rains, when the ground becomes saturated with water. They crawl up the sides of foundations, exterior walls, windows and doors and enter through gaps and spaces. Once inside millipedes can be found hiding in dark damp places, underneath of boxes and furniture and in basements, kitchens, bathrooms and in crawl spaces. Dangers Millipedes do not bite or sting and are not dangerous to people or pets. They do have the ability to excrete a toxic liquid through spaces along the sides of their body. This liquid can cause problems for small pets and can cause the skin on humans to become blistered or irritated. The liquid can also leave behind a foul smell that needs to be cleaned away. Millipedes Prevention Reduce humidity levels Caulk gaps around windows and doors Keep water away from around the home Use de-humidifier Earwigs Color: Brown to reddish-brown Characteristics: Long slim bodies. Pinchers or “cerci” on the back of their abdomen. Size: Varies by species Potentially Dangerous: No Description: earwigs will cause damage to gardens. They will feed on the shoots of young seedlings, damaging the plant so that it will not be able to yield a crop. Your houseplants might be in danger if earwigs have infested the house. They will not consume entire houseplants but will feed on decaying organic material found in the soil and may eventually damage the roots of plants, especially young ones. Nesting Sites: Earwigs are attracted to outdoor lighting and often enter homes through cracks in the foundation and underneath doors. This is often by accident when they are searching for food. They may also migrate inside when the weather become too hot or too dry. Earwigs favor damp, dark places. You may also find earwigs inside because they were on the newspaper that the paperboy threw on the lawn, on packages the deliveryman left on your step and on potted plants that had been set outside. Dangers There’s a myth associated with earwigs that they crawl into brains and lay eggs. Thankfully this is completely untrue. Really, there is nothing dangerous about earwigs. Even their pincher-like appendages are not used against people. Earwigs are primarily nuisance pest, both inside and out. Earwig Prevention Reduce humidity levels Caulk gaps around windows and doors Keep water away from around the home Use de-humidifier Carpenter Bees Color: Carpenter bees have abdomens that are black and shiny, not hairy; males are orange and black in color and females are completely black. Potentially Dangerous: Yes Description: Carpenter bees do not use the wood around your home as a food source but for a nesting site. They bore circular holes in it to lay their eggs and will also use those holes to nest in over the winter months. They prefer unpainted, weathered softwoods; these areas are usually found on decks, porches and sheds. Carpenter bee breeding pairs will often come back to the same area year after year to make their nest; this also increases the amount of damage that they can do to your home. Danger Female carpenter bees do have stingers, but rarely sting people unless they are directly handled or threatened. Male carpenter bees are aggressive, but do not have a stinger; they will fly around your head and buzz loudly in an effort to intimidate you. The holes that the carpenter bees create in the wood of your home can be enough to weaken the structure. Woodpeckers, attracted to carpenter bee larvae, may also cause damage to the structure. --- ### Wasps & Hornets > Wasps & Hornets are some of the pest control problems we solve regularly. Potentially Dangerous: No Nesting Sites: Officially called “Rasberry Crazy Ants” they have been known to build their nests inside walls and even inside electrical equipment like air conditioning units. Crazy ants will nest in both dry and moist areas; outside they can be found nesting in the soil, in tree cavities, under rocks, under rotten wood, and under buildings. Crazy ants don’t like and can’t survive in cold weather; they will move inside from the outside to infest homes and other structures when the weather becomes too cool for them. Damage They can take over your yard and your home quickly. Their populations are enormous and they even drive out other types of ants and animal populations. They are known to bite, but their bite is considered less painful than that of fire ants, for example. They are a problem when they enter your home in large numbers or when they build their nests inside your home or inside electrical equipment, which can then cause the equipment to malfunction. Signs of Infestation Crazy ants move in an erratic, jerky way. Other ant species will move in a straight line as they work together searching for and gathering food, crazy ants do not, they move in more of a frantic zigzag pattern. The unique “crazy” way that they travel is the best indicator of your home being infested by crazy ants. Size: Varies by caste member, but generally range from 1/8 of an inch to 3/8 of an inch. Potentially Dangerous: Yes, definitely to your property Description: Subterranean termite colonies consist of three different types of termites: workers, soldiers and swarmers. Termite Workers Workers are the smallest, measuring only around 1/8 of an inch long. These are wingless and soft-bodied bugs that vary in color from white to gray-white. They are the most numerous in a colony and are the ones that do the actual wood eating. Termite Soldiers Soldiers look a lot like the worker termites, but are larger and have rectangular heads that are yellowish-brown. They also have a prominent set of jaws that are used to help defend the colony. Termite Swarmers Swarmers are the ones that are responsible for keeping the population going. They are 3/8 of an inch long, including their wings and can be male or female. They vary in color; sometimes they are black and can range to yellowish-brown. The service pro will then apply a fogging solution to your yard and bushes to remove existing pests as well as apply a larvicide in standing water sources to kill existing mosquito larvae before they hatch.
